Import-Export Code (IEC): Why You Need It and How to Apply

What Is an IEC?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce. It is a mandatory requirement for any business or individual looking to import or export goods and services commercially from India.

Who Needs One

Any entity engaged in export or import activity - proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, and companies alike - needs an IEC, with very limited exceptions (such as personal use imports not connected to any trade or manufacture).

How to Apply

  • Apply online through the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in).
  • You'll need PAN details, a cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and address proof for the business.
  • The application is processed electronically and typically issued within a few working days once documents are verified.

After You Have Your IEC

Your IEC needs to be updated annually (even with no changes) during the specified window each year - failing to do so can result in the code being deactivated. It should also be updated whenever your business details (address, bank account, directors) change.

Once issued, the IEC is used on every shipping bill, customs filing, and bank transaction related to your export/import business - it's effectively your business's trade identity with Indian customs and the banking system.
