How to Choose the Right HS Code for Your Export Shipment

What Is an HS Code?

The Harmonized System (HS) Code is a standardized numerical classification used by customs authorities worldwide to identify products being imported or exported. It determines the duty rate, eligibility for trade agreements, and whether any additional permits or inspections are required.

Why Getting It Right Matters

  • An incorrect HS code can trigger customs delays while the shipment is re-classified.
  • It can result in paying the wrong duty rate - sometimes significantly higher than necessary.
  • Repeated misclassification can flag your business for increased customs scrutiny going forward.

How to Classify Your Product

HS codes follow a hierarchical structure: the first 2 digits indicate the chapter (broad category), the next 2 the heading, and the next 2 the subheading. Many countries add further digits for more specific national classification.

Start with the official HS Code lookup tool from India's DGFT or the WCO (World Customs Organization) database. Search by product description, material composition, and intended use - these three factors most often determine the correct chapter.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a competitor's or a generic industry HS code without verifying it matches your exact product.
  • Classifying a finished product under the code for its raw material.
  • Not updating the code when a product's composition or packaging changes.

If you're unsure, a licensed customs broker or CHA (Customs House Agent) can confirm the correct classification before your first shipment - a small upfront cost compared to the delays and penalties of getting it wrong.
